California's Governor States He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any determination is still years away.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
The California governor has emerged as a high-profile critic of the former president's team, using his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost the party's congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a weekend segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from California and threatened suspending the state's ability to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," he said, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team highlighted that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under U.S. law.
Duffy had earlier stated he was blocking $40m from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Administration
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a recent statement countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted study showed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an typical level of over 40% to current figures.
In previous months, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "No one can say? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
