Catherine's Annual Festive Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The 1,600 guests will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a message before the festive gathering.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
