As European nations cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv facing persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for not listening to European leaders.
The European Response
This situation requires a firm response from European leadership. Although certain leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their pushback, others—like British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.
Recently, the UK government refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.
They said, "He enjoys a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on cooperating with each to deliver stronger results for the British public."
The stark reality is that the president intends what he says and says what he means repeatedly. It is past time to stop pretending that things are different.
