Fabio Wardley Poised to Become WBO World Champion as Ukrainian Champion Usyk Relinquishes Title
Britain's heavyweight contender is expected to be elevated to WBO heavyweight champion after the Ukrainian champion decided to relinquish his world title
This follows after Usyk informed the World Boxing Organisation he would not engage in a mandatory title defence against the British challenger
Official Announcement
The WBO stated that Usyk chose to vacate his belt after deep reflection"
Usyk still holds the three major championship belts, having beaten his British opponent at the famous London venue in July to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion
He originally secured the complete unified champion in spring 2024 by defeating the British champion, before relinquishing one championship shortly after and choosing to avoid the obligatory contender
"Boxing official the WBO leader praised the Ukrainian fighter in a statement"
"The organization offers its sincere admiration and thanks to Oleksandr Usyk, an undefeated, two-division WBO undisputed world champion"
"His achievements mark one of the most extraordinary and historic of the contemporary boxing period"
The organization continued that its institution will continue to support Usyk and his team"
Championship History
Usyk secured the championship in 2021 by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to defend it four times
In summer, the championship body required discussions for a obligatory championship fight against New Zealand's Parker, only for a Usyk's physical issue to require rescheduling of the fight
New Champion's Path
But Wardley, 30, took the interim title from Parker with a major surprise in the 11th round at the famous London arena in the previous month and was mandated to face Usyk before the month's conclusion
The boxing organization hasn't formally announced the British fighter's elevation but his promoter Frank Warren believes it is a formality
"The UK has a recent title holder and a rising boxing talent"
"One of the most incredible stories I've seen in my 45 years as a promoter and I could not be prouder of Fabio Wardley"
"Major contests coming up for 2026 as he protects his championship and builds his reputation in the sport"
The champion started fighting relatively late, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had just 21 professional fights
