He battled the law and the law prevailed.

Sixty days after being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally appears headed to prison.

Expected Imprisonment

The convicted plotter – who had been subject to home confinement in his estate while a set of judicial steps and challenges play out – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid mounting talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security penitentiary.

Previous Remarks on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the far-right former paratrooper exhibited little mercy for Brazil’s prison population.

“What’s the need to give those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, several of whom this week visited the facility in an seeming attempt to prevent the judiciary from banishing him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, said he expected the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute gut issues – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 political campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells holding four dozen detainees: “That’s practically one meter squared per detainee.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Allies React

Lucas is not the sole person speaking out prior to the former president’s expected imprisonment.

Penning in a major newspaper, one more backer, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to see “the biggest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an unfairness that gnaws the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” he stated.

Mixed General Response

It is possibly true due to the significant following Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. Yet his expected imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of many others who believe he should be incarcerated for planning to prevent his successor from taking power – and even scheming to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive dignified care – but proper care in prison. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long celebrating the harsh handling of convicts, had suddenly become aware to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always claimed that civil liberties are not for offenders – opted to visit a jail to find out what circumstances are really like,” he said.

“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, degrading treatment”.

Potential Prison Environment

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which now holds about thousands of inmates, his more likely location looks to be a adjacent jail for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the impressive leader's home, approximately 12 miles away.

According to reports, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the area of two parking spaces – and features a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “He could be permitted to have a set and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were provided by his family,” the report stated.

Partisan Reactions
