The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
