The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
