The move from the Democratic National Committee to suppress the publication of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race is stunning but not surprising. Opposed to hard truths, the DNC operates closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization focused on cultivating local power capable of prevailing at the polls.
An Environment Resistant to Internal Critique
Hesitant to challenge the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has continued within that legacy throughout 2025. Publishing an official autopsy could have demonstrated that the leadership are interested to promote honest conversation about the strategic failures that enabled the former president to win re-election. However, the DNC is proceeding as if there are no lessons to be learned following the stunning loss of 2024.
"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it’s a distraction from our fundamental goal," an explanation reportedly given to justify concealing the document.
Critical Problems a Report Might Have Examined
Any valuable post-mortem worth its salt would confront a series of difficult topics. These include:
- Voter Disenchantment: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive during the tight 2024 election.
- A Insistence to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence of the incumbent to run again, coupled with a last-minute step-aside, has been criticized as denying Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
- Losing Touch With Everyday Americans: While facing inflation, the campaign is criticized for accommodating corporate donors' interests and not managing to address the effects of big business.
- A Foreign Policy Effect: The failure to adjust a policy position concerning a major international conflict reportedly led to losing key demographic groups, especially with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
- Losing Youth Allegiance: Polling data shows a huge decline in Democratic support from the youth electorate.
A Pattern of Evasion
This refusal is consistent with a pattern of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. It recalls a dynamic in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Congress supported an incumbent's determination to running for re-election right up until a poor televised debate forced a reversal.
At the same time, a significant majority of Democratic voters had been continually telling surveyors of their opposition to that candidate to be the nominee.
Campaign Spending Issues
A substantive autopsy could examine issues regarding campaign spending, such as how much money went to high-priced advisors and media firms over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend a staggering war chest in a short period.
The Larger Problem
Fundamentally, the secrecy of the official autopsy points to a submission to party leaders responsible for an unsuccessful national race. The message for the party's base – including millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they do not have a right to see what the insiders say they discovered from a report drawing from conversations with insiders.
A party unwilling to critically review its mistakes will struggle to escape the rut which was so helpful to their opponents.
