Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth left Mexico on the 20th of March.

A large-scale search and rescue effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailing vessels loaded with relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Initiated

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than nine total sailors, according to a navy statement.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine crew members are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader International Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have been ramped up lately, with statements from different leaders highlighting the complicated state of relations.

Responding to certain proposals, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the boats and guarantee the security of the people on board.

At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
